The Martian

Holy cow, did I love this book!

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

I was not expecting to enjoy it so much. This book is exciting and so easy to get into - I was hooked from the very first sentence! It was smart, and not only in the technical, sciencey (yes, I made that word up) way but also in the delivery. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story from the perspective of the main character. The way Andy Weir brought Mark Watney to life is wonderful. I laughed a lot, but was also on the edge of my seat for most of the story. I even found myself holding my breath a couple of times! I enjoy a lot of books, but do not give out 5 star ratings often - THIS IS A FIVE STAR BOOK! This is not your typical "science fiction" so even if that's not your cup of tea, you should read The Martian by Andy Weir. Now, to watch the movie and see if it does the book justice...

  1. For you to give a 5 start rating, it must have been really exceptional. When you watch the movie, you must remember to go into it as a movie, not necessarily as a movie based on a book. You and I have both been disappointed too many times. ;)

  2. This sounds like a really great book. I may end up reading it. Movies never give do a book justice but I have heard it's a decent movie.

    1. You should give it a read, it's easy and goes quickly. :) Most movies are never quite as good as the book, but I'm really interested to see how they tell the story. I'll post again when I finally watch it!
